Roman Numerals Converter The Roman numbering system had no zero. Therefore, the smallest number that can be converted is 1. Also, there is no symbol for numbers larger than 1000. Since standard Roman notation does not allow any symbol to be repeated more than three times, the numbers 4000 and larger cannot be represented (3999 is the largest number allowed).
